Phantasy Star Online 2 (JP) - 2nd media conference

Phantasy Star Online 2 held a really awesome press conference earlier to announce what its developer SEGA is planning for the latest title in the long-running franchise. Some of you might have played the English version of Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst, hence PSO2 will be really of interest to you as well.

Coming Free to Play (F2P) early this summer in Japan, the game will share similar content with the PlayStation Vita version coming spring 2013. The smartphone (iOS/ Android) game coming this winter will have a separate game, but nevertheless still have some linked content with the other 2 platforms. The smartphone version, of course, will spot a simpler control scheme and character customization will not be as extensive as well.

This is the part which impressed me the most from a business point of view. SEGA also rolled out various partnership with PC brands to promote Phantasy Star Online 2. In the pictures below, you can see some of the bonus items players can get when the purchase the corresponding hardware pieces. Like I said, from a business standpoint, this is absolutely a complete presentation of how much effort SEGA is putting in.

Closed Beta test, in Japan only of course, will be happening soon in late April. For this test, SEGA will be granting a whopping 100,000 gamers access to the game servers. Hopefully, the game will see light in the English market next year or in 2014.

Wild Buster (KR) - Diablo in space with guns

Diablo in space with guns? Well, almost, I guess. This is Wild Buster (with an attached Project Titan, probably the original codename) developed by Korean outfit Star Ducks Studio, with the team comprising of staff with around 10 years of experience. Wild Buster only started development last year, hence I must say I am quite impressed with how the game is looking right now.

As you can see, the Diablo reference came from the isometric view. Wild Buster really reminds me of another Korean MMO which went quiet since G*star 2010, NCsoft's Metal Black: Alternative. Players will be grouped in parties of 5 to clear various maps infested with various robotic monstrosities.

Other than PvE, there are group PvP maps as well such as capture the flag and team PvP. This will happen between the 2 warring factions of course, identified by their colors of blue and red.

The character selection screen for both factions, Guardians and Abandon, looks pretty similar to that of MOBA games' such as League of Legends and Dota 2, with various heroes each with different specialties to choose from.

The developer promised combat will be fast, exciting, with simple controls allowing even the most unskilled players to enjoy. The first beta is currently scheduled for late 2012 in Korea.

Path of Exile - Open to public this weekend!

Before you hae doubts, note that Path to Exile will be a Free to Play title at launch, just that it is currently in Closed Beta status. This weekend's public opening from March 30 till April 1 will be for server stress testing, with Open Beta happening "in a few months". This is basically asking the whole gaming community to crash their servers legally! So what exactly is Path of Exile?

Posted a couple of months before, Path of Exile is an upcoming Free to Play title developed in New Zealand by Grinding Gear Games. New Zealand?! Yeah I was surprised as well initially, as the country seems more famous for its cattle. The game somewhat gives off a Diablo vibe, with tons and tons of equipments with different looks to be looted. Watch the videos in this post, and sign up for an account now! Website: http://www.pathofexile.com/.

World Zero (CN) - Create your own world

Although this game was announced around 3 years back, I never did report about it as the concept of the game was kind of unclear for me, and there really ain't much specific details other than sketchy press releases in the Chinese media. Introducing World Zero, an upcoming self-developed online title by China's Shanda Games.

In a nutshell, World Zero is not really your typical MMO, but rather acts as a platform, allowing players to create their own ancient martial arts world. How does this work?

1. As you can see from the trailer above, ALL players will be able to edit their own world.

2. There is still core content and a game world created by the developers, just like any other MMORPGs. The theme, as mentioned, will be Chinese martial arts world (think Age of Wulin).

3. In the world creation system, players can create an alternate world, for other players to enter and explore. Think of it as a housing system where players visit each other, but this time a few thousand times bigger.

4. You can customize the mobs, their AI, shape the surroundings, create your own martial arts clan, own skills, own homeland and of course, your own world.

Clearer now? I wasn't really getting the whole concept until reading a couple of articles several times over and over again, since the website doesn't really explain stuff in detail. At this point of time, game details are still slightly sketchy, with only the 2nd Private Test phase coming up in April where 100 lucky players will get to try the game out.

Queen's Blade to Launch 2nd CBT on April 16th

According to the latest news dated Mar. 23rd, Korea-based liveplex announced that Queen's Blade, the brand new 3D MMORPG specially developed for females, will launch its 2nd CBT from April 16th to April 22nd for 7 days. The game has received much attention from many players since its first CBT on Feb. 2nd and the game server has almost been overloaded.

As an MMORPG specially designed and made for females, characters in the game are all women except some NPCs. With a simple world lore, Queen's Blade tells a story where the earth was seriously destructed after being attacked by alien creatures one day in the far future. Human Beruman (player character) that survived in the depth of the earth then joined forces with new human Yelcana created by the Yelca system to fight foes desperately for the earth!

With a sound constitution, Yelcana usually fights against foes by means of mental power. After entering the game, you will find characters endowed with fairly striking exposure effects. Each character is designed immensely sexy.

What's more, the second CBT is to recruit testers formally on March 26th. Please head on to its http://queens.kr.gameclub.com/ for details.

Diablo-style Action MMO Sura Online

The new action MMO Sura Online(Official Site: http://www.tempest9.com/) was unveiled in UP2012 Tencent Games Annual Press Conference on March 21st, at which Tencent Games officially announced that it had gained the publishing rights of Sura Online in Mainland China. In addition, as the first MMO whose global publishing rights have all been acquired by Tencent Games, Sura Online will also begin its step into global markets.

As a 3D Chinese-style action MMO developed by Korea-based NSE Entertainment, Sura Online strives to create the combat mode focusing on both attack and defense for players, and is mainly characterized by PVP content with Diablo style, enabling players to combat in eight directions with various splendid moves rather single and simple combats in traditional MMOs. There are oriental beauties and tough guys in the Chinese-style Sura Online, which is also glorified a lot with Chinese traditional weapons such as pipa, nine-section whip, pike, etc., and Chinese-style sceneries such as bamboo forest, lily pond, as well as the unique rendering with water and ink.

Dragon Blade (CN) - NetEase reveals Game-X

China's number 2 MMO company, NetEase, finally revealed Game-X's name, which is Dragon Blade. Supposedly to be used to counter Tencent's upcoming Blade & Soul, Dragon Blade is self-developed by NetEase using an in-house graphics engine, Next-B. Touted as being much more advanced than most 3D engines, every detail down to direction of sunlight streaming in a dense forest is impeccably processed. Of course, other models such as buildings, characters etc are included as well.

The overall visuals is said to give players a near-CG feel. Another feature will be HDR, which means High Dynamic Range imaging. You can read more about this technology in the link provided, as it is really too technical for me to summarize. NetEase has taken the unusual step of showcasing the game in all its in-game glory, and that really pleases me. Enough of lame CG trailers!

Combat will be non-target action (Yeah!!!) and movement combat is supported on a 360 degrees scale (screw TERA). According to the current development plan, mobs will have 6 different parts for players to attack, including the head, left body, right body, chest and back. Each part when damaged to a certain level will cause that mob to have a specific negative effect. At the same time, players' attack damage, distance, weapon type will cause different effects such as stunt, knock back and knock down.

Getting a tiny bit of inspiration from PlayStation 2's hit game, Shadow of the Colossus, there will be HUGE boss monsters which will be a thousand times bigger than each player. Teams will have to scale up these monsters from their foot to attack their vital parts. Other features include open PvP, castle siege, PvP arenas and more. Currently still in development phase, I can't wait to see some BAM ass-kicking footage soon!

DK Online - Confirmed for North America and Europe

Basically, DK Online is a massive online PvP title, with an in-depth Baron hierarchy system which allows players with power to rule over territories. Expect open PvP and tons of castle siege action. Oh, before I forget, Aeria Games will be the publisher for the North American and European server. I am not sure if this is good news as the company just closed several games recently...

Free to Play Square Enix Game Coming?

Square Enix and Bigpoint have teamed up on an “exciting new project”. The new game, which is already well into development at Square Enix, will be published and marketed by Bigpoint in Europe and North America.

The title will be distributed on the Bigpoint.com portal, as well as by other media partners. Focusing heavily on social gameplay and encouraging user generated content, the game will be unveiled in the near future.

More detailed information about the game will be made public within the next few weeks. In the next six months, the game should be available and fully playable. Is this a new IP? Or a popular franchise like Final Fantasy? We will need to wait and see what happens.

Dungeon Striker (KR) - From Dragon Nest's developer

You know it will not be long before Eyedentity Games, the developer of Dragon Nest, reveals its 2nd online title. With Dragon Nest celebrating its 2nd anniversary this year, there can't be a better time. Introducing Dungeon Striker, a new action MMORPG. It certainly is a give-away with its game title that combat will take place mostly in dungeons. Focusing on even faster action found in Dragon Nest, players are able to attack up to 10 times in 1 second in the game. And notice the cuter design!

As you can see in the videos and screenshots, the game has an isometric view, which seems to be very popular nowadays with upcoming games such as Lineage Eternal, the MOBA titles such as Dota 2 and of course, Diablo III. Controls will also be much simpler in Dungeon Striker, with players able to successfully engage in combat and moving around by using just the mouse.

According to the explanation given by the media, characters will automatically attack monsters even when characters are moving, even during PvP. Eyedentity Games touted that they have solved the problem with current action MMOs needing too many active keys, and with Dungeon Striker, players can enjoy intensive combat with gorgeous action effects without much effort. Similar to the system in Diablo III, the dungeon layouts will be randomly generated each time players enter the same one.

There are currently over 19 classes (including advancements) in Dungeon Striker, but the twist will be the ability to learn other classes' skills. For example, a Dark Mage who can heal, a Warrior who can go stealth and place traps. There will be many different combinations of characters in the game. Dungeon Strikers will go into Closed Beta in Korea from 27th April to 29th April.

Similar to its prequel, Nexon Korea will be developing the game, using Valve's latest version of the Source engine. The sequel will sport more detailed and smoother graphics, with game content enhanced and new ones added. Defiance - Combat trailer debuts

Been quite a while since Trion Worlds, the creators of RIFT, teased the gaming world about Defiance. A collaboration with USA TV channel Syfy will see a TV series produced based on the game, but to some extent little was revealed about how the game actually plays. The latest combat trailer was released just hours ago, and it shows a huge team of human players against a huge army of monsters, collectively known as Hellbug Horde. I am sensing Red 5 Studios will have some serious competition now in the PvEvP area where online shooters are concerned. Webste: http://www.defiance.com/en/.

Divina Early Beta Sign-Ups!

Gamania Digital Entertainment announced that starting Friday, April 20, 10:00 AM PDT, fans can get their first hands-on experience with its upcoming free-to-play, 3D MMORPG, Divina, during the Challenge 72 beta event. Players will have 72 hours to explore Divina’s features and game world while competing in exciting weekend challenges for cool prizes. In addition, those who participated in the Challenge 72 beta event will receive exclusive items if they return to the next PVP beta.

Divina is a colorful MMORPG filled with thousands of quests, unique characters, intense open world PvP combat, and numerous fun features. Gamania has been steadily revealing information on the game – most recently the Quick Change, Sidekick, and Creature Tome systems – building up to Divina’s PVP Closed Beta, planned for this year.

Features:
  • Quick Change System: Using Exchange Points (EP), players can instantly swap between a Main Class and Sub Class at any time – even in battle. The Quick Change system adds significant depth to combat, as complimenting classes must be carefully paired and Quick Changes used strategically – it can mean the difference between victory and defeat, especially during PVP battles.
  • Sidekick System: Adventurers are accompanied by a trustworthy Sidekick of their choice that can be evolved in unique ways through player interaction. Much more than a pet, Sidekicks are an essential companion in battle and gain levels, classes, attributes and skills just like a normal character.
  • Creature Tome System: Throughout the world of Divina, there are hundreds of monsters to be researched and collected in the Creature Tome. Once fully researched, players can activate special transformation abilities and gain both the monster’s skills and appearance in battle.

The Challenge 72 beta is invite-only with Gamania distributing a limited number of beta keys to those who’ve registered at the official website. This week will be the last chance for players to sign up before the invites have all gone out: http://us.beanfun.com/divina/signup/beta.aspx.

All registered players will automatically be entered for the chance to win an invitation to the Challenge 72 beta event beginning April 20, 10:00AM PDT and ending April 23, 10:00AM PDT.

Aion: Ascension Now Live!

NCsoft launches Aion: Ascension, a powerful combination of its Free business model, and the anticipated 3.0 update. Aion: Ascension introduces new and existing players to refined starting areas and mid-level zones and advanced content for the more experienced Aion player base with no subscriptions, no account tiers and no purchase requirements.

Along with the C.U.B.E. The information revealed within the Atreian Atlas provides insight allowing players to properly prepare for what lays ahead.

Aion: Ascension also brings players several features including housing, mounts, new zones and multiplayer instances.

Dungeon Hero (KR) - EyaSoft's dungeon crawler

I know, Dragon Nest developer Eyedentity Games just announced Dungeon Striker recently, which I think forced EyaSoft to reveal their rendition of a online dungeon crawler as well. EyaSoft, if you remember, developed some rather memorable titles including Luna Online, Legend of Edda and Iris Online.

After temporary ceasing all work on their previous games, EyaSoft is now back with its 2nd title, Dungeon Hero. The first title to be announced after the studio's revival was the spiritual successor to Luna Online, Luna Story: ELs.

Unlike Dungeon Striker which is a real time action slasher, Dungeon Hero still adopts the classic targeting system, which will no doubt draw in a different crowd of gamers who are still not used to action games. Combat is not really that slow, which I can attest with my experience in Legend of Edda and Luna Online.

Featuring a "Heroes' Arena" inspired by MOBA games such as Dota 2, Dungeon Hero is still very much focused on PvP despite EyaSoft's trademark cute design. There is also a PvP map which accommodates guild wars, supporting 100 Vs 100 players at the same time. Dungeon Hero is expected to enter beta later this year.

Codename K (CN) - ChangYou's answer to Blade & Soul ?

As mentioned in my previous post, China MMO developer and publisher ChangYou revealed a number of titles which are in development, including "World of Shadowbane". While the China gamers are all awaiting Tencent's Blade & Soul China server, rivals such as NetEase announced Dragon Blade, which will take on the mammoth. While ChangYou did not publicly issue the challenge, "Codename K" certainly looks like a viable competitor for now.

Developed using CryEngine 3, the same machine used for ArcheAge and Warface, "Codename K" is based on a popular internet fantasy novel in China, hence expect heavy eastern oriental designs to the game. CryEngine 3 will allow much better visuals and more life-like interactions with objects, such as destroying trees and armor getting burnt when hit by fire spells. Environmental changes such as weather and seasons are implemented as well. Aerial combat is also mentioned, though there is no in-depth details at this point of time.

And yes, "Codename K" will feature non-target action combat, with an emphasis on chain combo attacks. Unlike games such as Mabinogi Heroes with an instanced world, "Codename K" will feature a vast open world like World of Warcraft's. More information is expected to be released at ChinaJoy 2012, happening at end July. And yes, "Codename K" will feature non-target action combat, with an emphasis on chain combo attacks.
