Eclipse War (KR) Debuts with Screenshots

Recently, Korea-based SG INTERNET obtained the operation right of "Eclipse War OL", a new 3D fantasy MMORPG, through an agreement with its developer, Korea-based NDOLPHIN.

"Eclipse War OL" shows us a fantasy world with two races in opposing positions. Players, whose characters can transform, will find much fun in the game and also in some quests. Specially, when the night falls, characters and monsters can gain a variety of special abilities.

Although Eclipse War OL is still at the early development stage, the dev said the game will have high completion when launches. They expected to cooperate with the global game companys. Through the agreement, SG INTERNET will have the right to publish "Eclipse War OL" in South Korea and overseas markets, so the game is expected to be open to overseas markets in future. Yulgang 2 (KR) - Closed Beta 2 being prepared

I know, since last November at G*Star where Mgame officially debuted Yulgang 2, there has since been little news except for a short Closed Beta 1. As a sequel to one of the most famous Free to Play martial arts online game in Korea, there is no doubt high expectations for the title. Korean gaming website PlayForum paid a visit to the developer and find out how more about Yulgang 2's current status.

1. Closed Beta 2 is currently being prepared, with over 100 staff working day and night to perfect the game.

2. Enhancing game's visuals. As an in-house developed game engine, the development team can keep updating the system to accommodate their demands and stay close to the original artwork. Satisfaction rate is now around 70% of the vision set, with specs for both low and high end computers in the works.

3. Improved new players guide. Players will not learn the basics of Yulgang 2 via quests in the actual game world, rather than an instanced "beginner zone". Although not stated how the new target system is like, the previous auto-select feature will be gone as players from Closed Beta 1 complained about it being inconvenient.

4. 2 new classes will be added in Closed Beta 2, which are the previously revealed, the Assassin and Sorceress. The faction system found in the prequel will make its debut as well.

5. There is currently no date yet, but the developer promised to address all concerns from Closed Beta 1 players and implement new content for Closed Beta 2.

Luna Plus - Closing after milking players dry

As a Free to Play gamer myself since the days of MapleStory's beta phase, it really pisses me off seeing how game companies out there are trying their best to milk gamers dry. Back in March 2011, I posted about Luna Plus Korea getting shut down as the developer (Eyasoft) is taking a long hiatus. Subsequently, gPotato emailed me in June 2011 and asked me to remove their company name, after I mentioned the North American server might be affected.

And to no surprise, they promised that updates will still arrive for Luna Plus and Iris Online, another of Eyasoft's game. After a check, the only noticeable game content update Luna Plus got was a party match-making system in July 2011, which was followed by tons of Cash Shop updates leading to the closure announcement.How many of you actually fell for it? Iris Online is currently still active, I dare say it will follow suit soon.

Eternal Blade coming to NA

Eternal Blade features a non-targeting battle system which allows players to attack multiple targets at one time. Through hunting, players will gather souls and enhance their abilities. The current version will offer four classes, i.e. Knight, Berserker, Archer and Mage, and two more new classes are expected to be released in the future. Heroic 3 Kingdoms (CN) - First Unreal 3 MOBA

MOBA stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena if you do not know, and games such as League of Legends and Dota2 fall into this category. In an attempt to enter the MOBA market in China, one of the largest games publisher and developer, NetEase, revealed its very own entry - a Unreal Engine 3 developed game based on Romance of the 3 Kingdoms, loosely translated as Heroic 3 Kingdoms.

What is so special about this game, since MOBA tends to follow the standard 2-lanes template? Well, for the main map, there are 3 lanes in this game, staying true to the 3 Kingdoms storyline. Seen in the supposedly leaked map layout below, the darker blue spots represents the item merchant in the wilds, the green spots represents low level mobs while the red spots indicates high level mobs.


There is currently no actual screenshot yet, but with its first Closed Beta hitting 6th April, I am guessing more information will be released soon. Heroic 3 Kingdoms currently boasts high AI mobs and new maps, but none are currently shown. And by the way, the characters are a physical re-imagination of the actual Three Kingdoms heroes. Panda again, yeah I know...

Blacklight : Retribution - Official launch dated

If you have a Nvidia GeForce card like I do, the latest driver update is specially tailored for a couple of Unreal Engine 3 games, such as Perfect World's Blacklight: Retribution. After 5 months of testing, the game is finally ready for an official launch for the North America and Europe servers on April 3, 2012.

Blade & Soul (CN) - Clone spotted in China

As I posted previously, Blade & Soul will be published in China by the country's biggest internet company, Tencent. While a secret registration process for selected gamers is going on for the China server and the Korean server preparing for its next Closed Beta phase, a Beijing-based developer released screenshots of its game earlier today.

With Tencent naming Blade & Soul as 剑灵, the developer named their revealed game similarly as well, claiming there is no copyright issue as they registered the name even before Tencent announced the title.

Chinese game website, 17173.com, paid a visit to the developer and was informed the game is currently 60% complete, with characters each having 2500 different actions, over 1100 different action effects and 600 environmental special effects. Some of the actions mentioned include wall-running and climbing.

Players can even set the game's camera view as a normal 3D game's or switch it to a 2.5D view, which I presume it as isometric view, similar to Diablo III. The developer plans to enter its first public testing sometime in May this year.

Heroic 3 Kingdoms (CN) - First screenshots

As mentioned in my previous post about this game, Heroic 3 Kingdoms is the first MOBA title to be developed using Unreal Engine 3. MOBA means Multi-player Online Battle Arena, where games including Dota, Dota 2 and League of Legends fall into. The brainchild of NetEase's founder and CEO, Heroic 3 Kingdoms differ from others having 3 opposing factions in a single game. Basically, it is 5 Vs 5 Vs 5 as the main feature. Below are some early screenshots, with the bottom 2 possibly showing off the spawn points for 2 of the 3 warring nations.

Everquest Free-to-Play is Live!

Sony Online Entertainment announced that it is celebrating the 13 anniversary of its landmark MMORPG, EverQuest, by transitioning the game to a free-to-play model. EverQuest now offers a variety of options that cater to players’ different needs and preferences so they can choose to play the game in a way that suits them best – such as recurring vs. non-recurring subscriptions and Free through Gold memberships.

EverQuest players will be treated to a variety of amazing in-game activities and game updates, including:

  • Lucky 13 – Players can now embark on anniversary missions and quests, surrounded by anniversary décor in the “Plane of Knowledge,” that follows a special 13th anniversary theme:
    • Players can experience 13 new quests
    • A spectacular mission as some of the iconic villains of EverQuest
    • A Raid to stop a familiar foe from gaining ultimate power.
    • And over 40 events from past anniversaries

  • Hero’s Journey – A book to guide players through a series of achievements from level one to level 85. Utilizing and improving upon content that is already in the game, characters may begin this journey at any level.
  • Improved Navigation – An added zone guide, this window is a quick way to look up zones in the game by level, zone connections, and other data about the zone.
  • Zoning Path Finder – The zone path finder generates a path between any chosen zone and any other zone in the world. Additionally, zone connections have been added to the Find window.
  • Improved Find Tracking – Find tracking is now visible in the map window. Players will be able to see your ‘find wisp’ in the map window and it will auto center on the path and zoom in and out so you can see the whole path.
  • Maps – Improvements to the maps have been made to elevate players’ adventures. Maps now support custom map directories, have added map label searching, the ability to right click on any point on the map to attempt to bring up a visible path to it.

Fighters Club - Teaser website now up

Making an appearance at the recent Game Developers Conference, no launch date was given to the media then. But it looks like Fighters Club, developed by the makers of Elsword, will be making its American debut real soon. The teaser website is now up! What exactly is Fighters Club?

Digimon Masters Launches New Update

Joymax announced the launch of the biggest content patch yet for their online massive multiplayer title, Digimon Masters. RaiderZ (KR) - Preparing for Open Beta

As you might have known now, the English server for RaiderZ is currently in Alpha test. Which means there will be glitches and some bugs, although quite a number swore not to have met any. The English server presumably is still not updated with the optimized graphics, which was added into the Korean server not too long ago.

As you can see in the new trailer above, there are quite a couple of new maps and epic bosses (otherwise known as BAMs, Big Ass Monsters) added into the Korean version. This is just the first step as publisher Neowiz Games prepare the title for Open Beta somewhere around summer.

[TG-UP 2012] Blade & Soul reveals party skills

So, some news for Blade & Soul China... Which got me really excited somehow. Ok, I am lazy to translate the whole presentation video seen below, but I will just translate the most important part which I think I have not read anywhere else. How about some bonuses for being in parties? Which was the last MMORPG which actually gives parties bonuses base on classes and combinations?

- There will be party skills in the game.

- Different skills will be available depending on the different class combination of the party.

- If previously your skills were unable to knock down big ass monsters (BAMs) or send them flying into the air to do some combos, you will be able to do so now with party skills.

- Even if 2 players are of the same class and same level with the same gears, the effect of the party skill will be different (not really sure what this meant).

The rest of the trailer talks about how NCsoft wants the game to succeed in China, hence the heavy China-inspired design path, along with how each class is designed using actual fighting styles and the fun of PvP while jumping across cliffs or running on the walls. All in all, Blade & Soul is merging the traditional MMORPG storyline with the fast combat found in action games. Some other lame Western game I tried decided to merge storyline with voice acting instead. Argh. Blade & Soul China enters its first beta in August 2012.

[TG-UP 2012] ArcheAge teases China-inspired city

Well, this is Tencent Games' important media event after all, how could ArcheAge and Blade & Soul be missing from the party? Over at the event, XLGAMES revealed that a new main city will be developed, with inspirations from the orient, China. You can view the 4 early screenshots of the city above and below. More China-inspired game content such as costumes, dungeons, maps and events will be added in the near future.

The first beta phase for the China server will also begin in tandem with Korea's Closed Beta 5, with the very first "draft" of Chinese localization made ready. Both servers will be with the same content, meaning the China server is sort of being fast forwarded right off the start. The overall game concept now is "Changing the World", with an emphasis on how elements such as weather, time, day and night, classes, environment, player housing castle siege and naval warfare actually allow players to craft a world which belongs to them.

The Chinese version of the novel will be available in June as well. An interesting note, author Jeon Min-Hee, currently a consultant in the ArcheAge team, will be doubling up as a consultant in Tencent's newly created literature platform. For the Chinese localized novel, she will be touring the country to hold autograph sessions. The novel is also rumored to be hitting the big screen in the future. [TG-UP 2012] Metro Conflict goes to China

I think this is the 6th or 7th online shooter currently in Tencent Games' stable. And none of them are in commercial phase yet! These titles include Webzen's BATTERY: Artic Wind and Crytek's Warface. Back to topic, Metro Conflict: Preston, developed by Korean studio Redduck, will be published in China by Tencent Games. Redduck shot to fame with its first title, the popular A.V.A (Alliance of Valiant Arms). What is so special about Metro Conflict?

Well, which other MMOFPS allows players to dual wield 2 different main guns? Not dual pistols mind you. The graphics of Metro Conflict (Unreal Engine 3) was also praised by many in my YouTube trailers, with some comparing it to big shot titles like Modern Warfare and Battlefield, except that Metro Conflict is Free to Play.

[TG-UP 2012] Kritika officially announced for China

Less than 6 months after Tencent Games Carnival 2011 ended, China's biggest online gaming company (and biggest multimedia company) is back with its 2012 media event, Tencent Games UP 2012. This is the event where upcoming strategies and new games for the rest of the year is announced. First up, although posted previously as a sketchy piece of news, Tencent Games finally revealed Kritika for the China region.

If you remembered, Kritika was first announced at Hangame eX 2011. With Hangame eX 2012 canceled, I am guessing this has got something to do with the promise of launching the China server in by this year. Back to the game itself, Kritika is touted as the fastest-paced action MMO ever, and marketed in China as the "playable manga". There are currently 3 races revealed, the Warrior, Thief and Magic Gunner.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes Goes Free-To-Play

No doubt Sony Online Entertainment is determined to walk on the way of free-to-play. Another beloved fantasy MMORPG, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, will officially go free-to-play this summer after DC Universe Online, EverQuest and EverQuest II.

"At SOE, giving players choices is the theme of how we're moving forward as a company. We see free-to-play (or as we refer to it, Free to Play. Your Way.) as a big part of our future and we like the flexibility it offers players. Therefore, I'm happy to announce Vanguard will be the next in line of our AAA games to make this transition. Since we've literally just begun on the work, I'm not ready to go into much detail. However, I will say that you can expect something similar to EverQuest®, EverQuest® II and DC Universe™ Online when we roll-out our free-to-play offering this summer. Once we have more information to share, you'll be the first to know. "

In addition, SOE has ramped up a Vanguard development team with Andy Sites (Director of Development), Salim "Silius" Grant (Creative Director) and Todd "Hobart" Schmidt (Technical Director) at the helm, and ready to take the game in exciting new directions full of regular new content, updates and much more. The first game update of 2012 will be hitting later this week!

End of Nations: CBT to Begin in Spring & OBT in Summer

If you like MMORTS games, then you won't want to miss End of Nations, Trion World's latest upcoming title. It has been 2 years since End of Nations debuted at E3 2010 (it is likely to appear at E3 2012). Now, it seems the long awaited game will be fully playable in a few short months.

The official website of End of Nations has been revamped and Trion Worlds has revealed the plan of attack for the game from now on. End of Nations is currently undergoing alpha testing and is going to launch its closed beta this spring with open beta following sometime this summer. The game will be final released in autumn.

End of Nations will be completely free to play but as Trion said, they will offer all gameplay contents to players, including "the campaign, the 50+ person co-op, the 'Conquer the World' metagame, the huge 52-player head-to-head multiplayer, everything." You can sign up for the beta test via the official website.

Mabinogi 2 In Development

Nexon holds a game art exhibition named ‘BORDERLESS’ and introduces five characters of <Mabinogi 2> for the first time on the 20th of January. Thisisgame visited there and shot a following video.

<Mabinogi 2> characters are featured in an installation work called <Campfire>, displaying five digital characters around a digital campfire. This work hanging between reality and virtual world also represents the theme of the exhibition, ‘BORDERLESS’.

The video shows in-game characters, not CG work. Look how delicate and detailed their hands, face, and hairs are. Each character has an unique class-mage, warrior, bard, archer, etc-but the class names are not official yet.

JinHoon Lee who is in charge of visual part of <Mabinogi 2> project did all the work. He commented “I chose the campfire because it is a typical community feature of <Mabinogi>. Though each character seems pretty ordinary respectively, they impress us something hovering between the reality and the virtual world when they are laid together in an analogue place.”

Nexon is to hold the game art exhibition every year through an experimental project ‘NX Art Lab’. Six of Nexon Korea DevCat Studio developers prepared number of works about <Mabinogi>.

Legend of Souls (KR) - New "adult" martial arts MMO

Korean developer CR-Space (now called Neowiz CRS after the acquisition) can really milk the martial arts genre to its maximum worth, seeing how its previous titles are all of the same genre. If you do not know, CR-Space is also the developer of Martial Empires in Europe, while known as Seven Souls Online in North American. Just a joke, someone mentioned "Why the heck would I play the game with just seven souls online?"

Legend of Souls will inherit a couple of features found in Seven Souls, such as the gambling system which made headlines in Korea back in the days, which was really why the game was labeled as "adult". Players will be choosing from 8 available weapons with the usual features such as fast combat, gorgeous skills, chain combos, guild battles and stuff. The first beta test will run from 5th April to 9th April with 5 areas and 29 levels of content ready.

NetEase prepares big reveal for Game-X

Although NetEase is the number 2 online gaming company in China, it was not able to break into overseas market in its 15 years of existence, quite similar to number 1 Tencent Games. Or perhaps they did not even both about it. Apparently, that is going to change with its upcoming self-developed title, codename Game-X. Nothing is known about the title now, with a shadow floating on the teaser page martial arts-like. But the first few screenshots of the game tells a different story.

You can see heavy metal element, bordering on a steampunk theme while retaining a Western-style architecture design. The big reveal is happening on 30th March, which is next week, and NetEase teased the game will be going global.

C9 Beta Test and Tournament

Webzen announced their first PvP Championship Tournament for the Action MMO C9 (Continent of the Ninth Seal) to be held prior to the official global launch.

Last February, the first global VIP test for C9 had finished, and to take the next step, Webzen is preparing to receive registrations for the “2012 C9 Championship Tournament” held this coming May. Users who wish to compete must enter through the registration page and accomplish a mission to participate. Those who join the tournament will receive various and unique benefits in future tests.

In preparation for the tournament, C9 will open the beta test that starts in April. At first, Webzen will prepare a media focused beta test exclusively for media that starts on April 12th. Afterwards, from the 15th, users will be able to join the beta test that continues until May 6th to complete the missions for the tournament participation in May. Also, more contents for both PvE and PvP that were not revealed in the first VIP test will be revealed during this beta test.

ChangYou goes global with Unreal Engine 3 title

I am not really sure why ChangYou acquired this game for the global market, but I guess I have different views from their board. Touted as the first anime-styled turn-based MMO to be developed using the Unreal 3 Engine, Peach Garden (directly translated) is kind of a rarity in the current market. The last client-based and turn-based MMO I remember to garner some credits was Atlantica Online, which was released quite some years ago.

I did try Peach Garden during its early days, and I wasn't really impressed with the combat. While one of the features is "Active Time Battle" which supposedly cuts down the timer in traditional turn-based games. i still find combat too slow for my liking given the slew of action titles being released in recent months. The game is developed in China by Playcool over a period of 45 months and reportedly cost USD 30 million to develop, an amount the gamers are questioning.

With that said, the game offers gorgeous visuals and quite an impressive class tree system which you can see below. I remembered the original tree branches down even more, perhaps they decided to keep some advanced classes back for now. Being a turn-based game, you can expect to recruit various other characters and tame creatures to battle on your side. I really feel it is a waste, since the turn-based genre ain't doing too well even in China, where 2 popular ones (including Atlantica China) recently announced their closures.

What about the West? Well, I think ChangYou did their research, so let's see. ChangYou is having quite a quiet 2012 so far with a web-based card game, Sword Girls, as its only flagship title. Personally, I am waiting for their other Unreal Engine 3 title, DaVinci Online.

Salem Closed Beta Sign-Ups

Paradox Interactive and Seatribe announced the opening of Beta sign-ups for upcoming Massively Multiplayer Online game, Salem. Developed by Seatribe, Salem is set in the New World when pilgrims were the norm and the frontier was still the greatest risk to a person’s health.

Salem is a unique core gaming experience for MMO players and crafting enthusiasts, known best for its Permadeath mechanic where in-game characters succumb to the harsh wilderness environment. Although Salem takes place in a light-hearted gothic setting with a charming and cute art-style, there is also open Player-versus-Player combat.
